“Subterfuge”, opening October 3rd, 2024, at 108 Contemporary, examines the predator/prey dynamics of institutions exploiting both the environment and vulnerable individuals. Featuring sculptures—blending human and animal forms—and digital images, the work delves into themes of deceit, exploitation, and environmental harm. The gallery will be arranged to evoke a dramatic Cathedral floor plan, with low lighting and spotlights highlighting each piece. The exhibition will include figures of deceptive predators, a mother figure (Earth) suffering under the weight of exploitation, prey succumbing to their own desires, and a young boy caught between forces, deciding his role in this cycle. Broken trees symbolize collateral environmental damage. One sculpture, “Mother”, is currently installed in Oklahoma’s landscape, where she is impacted by both natural and human-made forces. Photographs of “Mother” in her changing environment will be displayed in the exhibition, leading viewers through a path of destruction before encountering her in the gallery, eroded and degraded. This immersive installation invites reflection on the ongoing exploitation of the earth and its inhabitants, urging viewers to confront these urgent, interconnected issues.
